【関係副詞 Where】の使い方
英語の授業では、
関係副詞 where = 「～する場所」
と習うことが多いですよね。
例えば、
This is the restaurant where we had dinner.
（ここは私たちが夕食を食べたレストランです。）
これは典型的な 場所 を表す 関係副詞 where の使い方です。
しかし、実際の英語では where は場所以外にもよく使われます。
where の本質は、「その中で」「その場面で」というイメージです。
そのため、物理的な場所だけでなく、状況・場合・段階・立場などの「抽象的な場」を表す名詞にも使われます。
つまり、”家の中で”、”公園の中で”のような「場所」だけでなく、
状況の中で
その場合では
その段階では
その立場では
という意味でも where が使うことができます！
場所に使える【関係副詞 Where】
まずは場所に使える【関係副詞 Where】の例文から、おさらいておきましょう！
①This is the house where I grew up.
（ここは私が育った家です。）
②This is the park where we first met.
（ここは私たちが初めて会った公園です。）
関係副詞 where を 関係代名詞 which を使った文に置き換える
①This is the house where I grew up. （ここは私が育った家です。）
↓
①This is the house in which I grew up.
(※ grow up in the house なので in which になります。)
また、会話では
①This is the house (that/which) I grew up in.
も非常によく使われます。
②This is the park where we first met. （ここは私たちが初めて会った公園です。）
↓
This is the park in which we first met.
(※ meet in the park なので in which です。)
こちらも会話では
This is the park (that/which) we first met in.
も使われます。
場所以外にも使える【関係副詞 where】：どんな名詞と一緒に使う？
【関係副詞 where】が修飾できる名詞の例：
・situation（状況）
・case（場合・ケース）
・point（局面・段階）
・stage（段階）
・position（立場）
・circumstance（状況・事情）
・environment（環境）
・job (その仕事の中で)
これらはすべて、「何かが起こる場・環境・枠組み」を表す名詞です。そのため、where を使って自然に修飾することができます。
situation（状況）
This is a situation where everyone wins.
（これはみんなが得をする状況です。）
We are in a situation where we have to make a decision.
（私たちは決断しなければならない状況にあります。）
case（場合・ケース）
There are cases where this rule doesn’t apply.
（このルールが当てはまらない場合があります。）
This is a case where patience is important.
（これは忍耐が重要なケースです。）
point（局面・段階）
We’ve reached the point where we need help.
（私たちは助けが必要な段階まで来ました。）
There comes a point where everyone needs a break.
（誰にでも休憩が必要になる時があります。）
stage（段階）
He’s at the stage where he needs more practice.
（彼はもっと練習が必要な段階です。）
The project is now at a stage where we can begin testing.
（そのプロジェクトは、テストを始められる段階にあります。）
position（立場）
We’re in a position where we can’t refuse.
（私たちは断れない立場にあります。）
She was in a position where she had to choose.
（彼女は選ばなければならない立場にいました。）
circumstance（状況・事情）
There are circumstances where you have to act quickly.
（すぐに行動しなければならない状況もあります。）
Under some circumstances where safety is at risk, the event may be canceled.
（安全が危険にさらされる状況では、そのイベントは中止されることがあります。）
environment（環境）
We need an environment where everyone feels comfortable.
（誰もが安心して過ごせる環境が必要です。）
Children learn best in an environment where they feel safe.
（子どもは安心できる環境で最もよく学びます。）
job (その仕事の中で) *面接などでも使える
He’s looking for a job where he can use English.
（彼は英語を使える仕事を探しています。）
I want a job where I can work from home.
（在宅勤務ができる仕事が欲しいです。）
関係副詞 where が使えない [job] の例文
❌ This is a job where pays well.
は間違いです。
正しくは、以下のように『関係代名詞（主格）』を使います。
⭕️ This is a job that pays well.
（これは給料の良い仕事です。）
ここでは job が pay の主語なので、where は使えません。
(The job pays well.)
関係代名詞 which が使えない [job] の例文
⭕️ He’s looking for a job where he can grow. (関係副詞 where)
（彼は成長できる仕事を探しています。）
→He can grow in the job.
＊「”その仕事の中で” 成長できる」
❌ He’s looking for a job which he can grow. (関係代名詞 which)
→He can grow the job.
＊「彼がその仕事自体を成長させる」 ような意味になってしまいます。
○「He’s looking for a job in which he can grow. 」(前置詞in＋関係代名詞 which)
のようにwhichの前に前置詞inを入れることで、文法的には正しくすることは可能です。
(この文であれば一般的に、関係副詞whereを使うほうが自然。)
まとめ
これらの名詞に共通しているのは、「何かが起こる場・環境・状況」を表していることです。
そのため 関係副詞 where は「場所」だけではなく、「その中で」という意味で、抽象的な場を表す名詞にも自然に使われます。
